Philip Arno

Before Mr. Arno began his current position with the Austin Symphony (1978), Austin Lyric Opera (1987) and the Victoria Bach Festival (1984), he was a member of the Mobile Symphony (1968-70), Pensacola Symphony (1969-71), American Wind Symphony (1973), and the Calgary Philharmonic (1973-75). Along with his duties as a bass trombonist, since 1971 he has been exploring the world of the sackbut, which is a trombone from the Renaissance and Baroque Eras, and is a member of the Texas Early Music Project.

He studied with Peter Reichlin at the University of South Alabama and Terry Cravens at the University of Texas.

In tandem with his performing, from 1970-88 he was a piano technician, but he replaced that career with technology when he earned an associate’s degree in electronics in 1988. He retired in March 2014 from his position at Travis County as a customer support analyst.

He is a freelance photographer, has been a triathlete since 2001 and practices yoga and Tai Chi. Along with staying physically active to promote good health, he has been following a vegan lifestyle since 2005.

Philip is married to the retired principal oboist, Beth Sanders.
