ABOUT THE AUSTIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Founded in 1911, the Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is Austin’s oldest performing arts organization. The ASO offers a complete season of musical and educational programming. Masterworks concerts include a series of eight concert pairs running monthly September through May in the state-of-the-art Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts. The season also features the Sarah & Ernest Butler Pops Series. Programming for the entire family includes the Halloween Children’s Concert, as well as the popular James C. Armstrong Youth Educations Programs, which include Children’s Day Art Park, Young People’s Concerts, High School concerts and a variety of other school programs. During the summer, ASO presents the Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park – a free concert every Sunday evening in front of the Long center running early June through the end of August.

The mission of the ASO is to enhance the cultural quality of life for adults and young people of Austin and Central Texas by providing excellence in music performance and educational programs.

The organization has an annual operating budget of approximately $5.5m.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development is a key member of the senior management team.  The position is responsible for the leadership of a comprehensive and cost-effective development program. Working with the CEO/Executive Director and key ASO Board committees, the Director of Development develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates all fundraising activities in a manner that maximizes contributed income for the organization’s annual operating and capital needs. The position implements and oversees a multi-year strategic fundraising action plan that meets or exceeds established financial targets for all areas of giving, including sponsorship. The position develops and maintains donor/sponsor relationships and an ongoing and pro-active program to identify potential new supporters and sources of income. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, oversight of the ASO’s Annual Fund, corporate sponsorships, and grant programs as well as fundraising events and planned giving initiatives.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 Annual Fund Campaign

  • Set budget and campaign goals for each financial year with CEO/Executive Director and
  • Develop Annual Fund Campaign plan, working with Annual Fund Committee & CEO/Executive
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors capable of making major gifts.
  • Oversee the design and printing of fund drive mailings in collaboration with Director of Marketing.
  • Track all gifts, pledges and payments for the Annual Fund campaign in
  • Plan, implement and recruit Board volunteers for
  • Coordinate Web-based fundraising activities, such as online auctions or donation websites.

Corporate Sponsorship

  • Research, identify and implement strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of new, current, and lapsed corporate sponsors.
  • Create successful sponsorship proposals.
  • Work in partnership with the Executive Director and Corporate Partnerships Committee on all aspects of developing new corporate sponsorships and sponsorship renewal campaign

Foundation and Government Grants

  • Research prospective foundation and government
  • Coordinate with Director of Education & Community Engagement and Grant Writer on education-oriented
  • Oversee all grant proposals, and Cultural Arts funding
  • Write final reports for foundation and government
  • Maintain relationships with foundations and other grant funding bodies.

Database

In collaboration with the Database Manager:

  • Create and maintain prospect
  • Oversee the updating of mailing lists and patron
  • Oversee the entering of gifts, pledges and payments for individuals, foundations and

Special Events

  • Plan and manage special events as required in conjunction with CEO/Executive Director and any relevant Board
  • Establish fundraising or participation goals.
  • Assume responsibility for details involved in executing events and act as a liaison to special committees, the Symphony Society, and staff.

Board Liaison

  • Serve as ex-officio member of the Development-oriented Board Committees and, in conjunction with committee chairs, recruit other volunteers to participate in the development
  • Report to the Board and Executive Committee on progress of all fundraising campaigns; provide other reports and statements as
  • Actively engage the Board in all fundraising activities and educate members on ways to best cultivate, solicit and steward their networks
  • Recommend fundraising policies and procedures to the CEO/ Executive Director and Board with the goal of building a year-round development program that demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism and ethical

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven fundraiser with a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience, with direct experience in securing significant support from major donors, individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies, preferably in a performing arts environment.
  • First-hand experience working with trustees in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors.
  • Proven track record in building long-term organizational capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and inspire a development team.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to make judgment calls and sound, ethical decisions, while often managing multiple competing demands and priorities, displaying a heightened level of responsibility, confidentiality, integrity and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior management role, partnering with executive staff and high-performing nonprofit boards resulting in the development and implementation of creative fundraising strategies.
  • High-level interpersonal and management experience with the ability to communicate and partner effectively with diverse groups of external and internal constituencies including boards, major donors, volunteers, staff and musicians.
  • Executive presence, polished personal skills, highly developed verbal, presentation and writing skills, and comfort in formal and informal settings.
  • Proficient user of donor management software (experience with Tessitura database a plus).
  • Passion for the organization’s mission, understanding of the special needs of a non­profit organization and a commitment to carrying out the strategic vision.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion with proven ability to work successfully and collaboratively in a diverse environment and community is essential.
  • Love of classical music a plus.
