Founded in 1911, the Austin Symphony Orchestra is Austin’s most established and enduring performing arts group. Austin is a vibrant, artistic hub with a community that cares deeply for music and the arts. The ASO offers a complete season of musical and educational programming for the citizens of Austin and Central Texas. Masterworks concerts include a series of eight concert pairs running monthly September through May in the state-of-the-art Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long Center for the Performing Arts. Our season also features the Sarah & Ernest Butler Pops Series: October & February Pops at the Long Center and December & June Pops at Palmer Events Center.

Our mission is to enhance the cultural quality of life for the adults and young people of Austin and Central Texas by providing excellence in music performance and educational programming. We offer programming for the entire family, including a Fourth of July Concert and fireworks show on the shores of Lady Bird Lake, the Halloween Children’s Concert, our “Christmas in the Community” events, as well as the popular James C. Armstrong Youth Educations Programs, which include Children’s Day Art Park, Young People’s Concerts, a High School Concert Tour and a variety of other school programs. Each year we are proud to feature a Young Composer’s Competition for student composers 18 years old and younger, sponsored by Ernest and Sarah Butler.


The ASO is currently expanding our finance department and has created a new Chief Financial Officer position to further enhance our infrastructure and to play a critical leadership role in the development and execution of the ASO’s overall vision and finance strategy. As a member of the Orchestra’s senior management team and reporting to the CEO, the CFO will manage the multi-year and annual planning, day-to-day finances, and the accounting of an annual operating budget of approximately $5 million, a reserve fund of $1.7 million, and an endowment fund of approximately $13.5 million.

This position will oversee all fiscal and fiduciary activities of the ASO including, but not limited to, finance, investment, information technology, facilities, payroll, supporting the instrument acquisition process, corporate compliance, pension plan management, and risk management, and will advise the management team and Board in these areas. They will be responsible for adapting and improving the organization’s comprehensive operating model in light of developing strategic initiatives, while maintaining strong and productive relationships with vital organizational figures such as trustees, vendors, major donors, corporate sponsors, peer organizations and other important constituencies.


• Ensure appropriate internal controls are in place under GAAP standards and the effectiveness of accounting systems within the ASO.

• Prepare and present financial information to donors, Board of Trustees, and the Finance Committee, and advise key members of executive management on financial planning, operational and capital budgets, cash flow, strategies to achieve short- and long-range financial goals, and financial policy matters.

• Oversee strategic and tactical execution of the annual and long-range systems planning and be responsible for value-added analysis on technology systems spending.

• Work with staff to manage and prepare a variety of analyses and reports that pertain to the strategic planning and compliance of the organization including operating and capital budgets, projections, financial statements, tax returns, statistical information, audits, master planning and capital projects.

• Meet regularly with the Board and key committees (e.g. Executive, Finance, Audit), providing financial results, industry trends, key performance indicators, and completing ad-hoc analyses as required.

• Work closely with outside auditors and the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees. Manage the relationship with the external Audit Partner-in-Charge and the Chair of the Audit Committee and ensure all required filings and reporting are completed in an accurate and timely fashion, including 990, 990-T, 199, etc. Financial reporting for internal constituencies (including musicians), donors, and the general public is also a responsibility of the CFO.

• Establish and ensure compliance with all investment and endowment policies as approved by the Committees and/or Board of Trustees and recommend and implement appropriate endowment draw policies and spending plans.

• Manage key banking, insurance and other external relationships. Administer payroll, vendor payments, benefits, insurance, retirement plan, administrative personnel files, and the instrument loan fund.

• Oversee risk management programs including institutional risk assessment and required policy coverage.

• Track P&L and contribution to fixed costs for each concert and series.

• Promote a culture of trust, teamwork and high performance.


• An undergraduate degree and preferably an advanced degree in a related field. CPA certification strongly desired.

• Ten or more years’ progressive experience in Finance, with at least five years in a significant leadership role—ideally in the arts. Non-profit accounting experience preferred.

• Advanced Excel skills required. Experience with the Great Plains Dynamics accounting system and Tessitura a real plus.

• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, external audits, and tax returns (preferably nonprofit) required.

• Experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.

• Experience in Human Resources management and benefits administration desirable.

• Demonstrated experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff and high-performing nonprofit boards resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.

• High-level interpersonal and management experience with the ability to communicate and partner effectively with diverse groups of external and internal constituencies including board, major donors, volunteers, staff and musicians.

• Experience managing staff with full responsibility for building and managing the Finance and Information Technology departments

• Experience building new systems and implementing policies and procedures

• Passion for the organization’s mission, understanding of the special needs of a non¬profit organization and a commitment to carrying out the strategic vision

• Demonstrated ability to synthesize financial data and offer strategic alternatives

• Proven ability to work successfully and collaboratively in a diverse environment and community is essential

• Executive presence, polished personal skills, strong verbal, presentation and writing skills, and comfort in formal and informal settings

• Will interact on a frequent basis with other orchestras and arts non-profits, both nationally and locally. Appreciation for and love of symphonic music is a plus.

• Detail-oriented with the ability to make judgment calls and sound, ethical decisions, while often managing multiple competing demands and priorities, displaying a heightened level of responsibility, confidentiality, integrity and professionalism.

• Ability to handle sensitive situations, requiring poise, tact and diplomacy.
