Women's Symphony League of Austin

Women's Symphony League of Austin, founded in 1953, provides service and financial support to the Austin Symphony Orchestra and its children’s educational programs. With a diverse membership of over 650, this group gives over 10,000 hours of service annually and raised over $475,000 for the ASO last year alone.

Among the many educational /service projects on which members work are :

Children's Day Art Park - On Wednesday mornings during June and July, volunteers help with tickets, balloons, refreshments and art activities at Symphony Square in downtown Austin.
Maidens and Squires - Maidens and Squires is a junior symphony volunteer group for 7th grade boys and girls, that culminates in their presentation at the Jewel Ball early in their 8th grade year. Members of this committee serve as chaperones at the group's work sessions and socials.
Orchestra Relations - Volunteers help with food for the symphony at the dress rehearsals, generally on Thursdays prior to the weekend concerts, throughout the season.
Pops Concerts - Members of this committee must decorate the tables for at least one of the two Pops Concerts held at the Palmer Events Center each season (either late fall/December or late spring/May or June).
Symphony for Simple Simon / Sinfonica de Simon - WSL's award-winning project that introduces grade schoolers to the music and instruments of the orchestra. Two groups (one performing in English, one in Spanish) have rehearsals and perform at area schools.
Teacher Appreciation - Committee members help with food and other aspects at one or two after school events that honor area school music teachers each fall (usually early November).
Young People's Concerts - This committee helps with ushering /general assistance and decorates for the Kinder Concerts near Halloween at the Paramount Theater and ushers and assists at the Youth Concerts on weekday mornings in the Spring.

MEMBERSHIP

Candidates for membership in the WSL are recommended by current members. Active members are requested to participate both financially and with volunteer hours each year on the two major fundraisers: Jewel Ball in the fall and Designer Showhouse in the spring. They are also required to participate on at least one other service or educational committee and to assist in hostessing a general meeting once every two years.

General Meetings, which include a program and social time as well as a short business session, are usually held in the late morning on the second Monday of each month, September through May. There is at least one evening meeting each year, and efforts are made accommodate holidays, etc. Attendance at General Meetings is not required. For further information, call (512)476-5098 or email: membership@wslaustin.org.
